The Uffizi tour is an absolute must when visiting Florence. Known as the oldest museum in the world, Uffizi built in 1560 by the famous renaissance arch. G Vasari originally had a different purpose. The grand duke of Tuscany Cosimo I de Medici decided to re-establish the authority of the Medici family. Unlikely the other regions of Italy in Florence money meant power.
The great industries of Florence such as the art of wool, silk, bankers etc. had a huge influence on the politics in Florence. After Cosimo I eliminated most of his rivals he decided to collect the rest of them in one single building and give to each of them an office. In fact, Uffizi means offices. Cosimo’s idea was to keep his eyes and his ears on all them. After Cosimo’s death his children lost interest in politics that is why his eldest son, Francesco I brought his private collection of art works and made from this place a private museum. That’s why Uffizi is considered the oldest museum in the world.
